Study on the prebiotic effect of yeast cell walls published in Journal of Animal Science (JAS) Study on the prebiotic effect of yeast cell walls published in Journal of Animal Science (JAS)
In collaboration with Ghent University, Leiber GmbH carried out a study with the aim of assessing the potential of the prebiotic activity of Biolex® MB40 within the canine gastrointestinal tract. Biolex® MB40 consists of cell walls of genuine brewer's yeast (100 % Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and is distinguished among other factors by its high natural content of β-glucan and Mannan oligosaccharides (MOS).

For the study, an in-vitro system (SCIME™ Simulator of the Canine Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem) was deployed, which can retrace the entire canine digestive tract with all its microbiological processes under controlled conditions without working directly with an animal. The SCIME™ delivered not only detailed information about the prebiotic activity of Biolex® MB40 by measuring various biomarkers, but also the precise location of the area where it is active.

In the study that has now been published, a prebiotic effect of Biolex® MB40 on the canine gastrointestinal tract could be demonstrated. Biolex® MB40 is digested moderately and selectively, in particular by the canine microflora in the distal colon. Changes in the metabolic activity were able to be directly associated with specific changes to the microbiota, e.g. the stimulation of propionate–producing families, such as Porphyromonadaceae and Prevotellaceae. At the same time, potential pathogens, such as Enterobacteriaceae and Fusobacteriaceae were able to be decreased. Biolex® MB40 therefore has a positive influence on the composition and activity of the microorganisms and is a promising natural source for the improvement and protection of intestinal health.

Guest lecture at University of Plymouth: Sustainable aquaculture and functional brewer’s yeast products Guest lecture at University of Plymouth: Sustainable aquaculture and functional brewer’s yeast products
Guest lecture at University of Plymouth: Sustainable aquaculture and functional brewer’s yeast products Sustainable aquaculture and functional brewer’s yeast products – industry guest lecture at University of Plymouth and scholarship

Aquaculture significantly contributes to food and protein supplies around the globe. Aquaculture production now exceeds capture fisheries landings as a source of food for human consumption, accounting for 53 % of total global fish production (FAO, 2018). Aquaculture is often already a sustainable production system but more can be done to help underpin the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015.

At the University of Plymouth, students on the MSc Sustainable Aquaculture course are offered an excellent training programme on the sustainable use of resources for aquaculture production, aquatic animal health, reduction of environmental impacts and addressing socio-economic factors. As part of the programme a series of industry guest lectures is delivered by representatives from leading companies and organisations along the value chain in order to give students first-hand insights from a commercial perspective.

This year’s initial lecture of 25th February was given by Dr. Holger Kühlwein, Global Key Account Manager Aquaculture at Leiber GmbH. He presented an overview of the wide brewer’s yeast product range using different fractions of the yeast cell, their quality aspects and applications in aquafeeds and aquatic animal health, and how these products can contribute to overall sustainable aquaculture. The focus however was on highly-purified ß-glucans extracted from the yeast cell wall. These are fed prophylactically via functional feeds, and they are capable of increasing immune competence of animals leading to higher stress and disease resistance. Core markets for these purified ß-glucans are salmon and rainbow trout, sea bass and sea bream as well as the shrimp production.

Industry Scholarship Programme
As part of the extended collaboration and commitment to sustainable aquaculture Leiber GmbH is also investing in the Aquaculture Sustainability Industry Scholarship Programme by providing funding for two of the students. Each of them will be able to apply and further develop acquired knowledge and lab skills by being part of the testing of two selected brewer’s yeast products. Their specific functionalities require scientific evaluation across various species and their life stages, as well as a constant (re)adjustment according to scientific developments and changing requirements in the aquafeed industry as a whole. “This, in combination with the predicted high annual growth rates of the aquaculture industry and the consequential increasing need for a highly-skilled workforce, is the incentive for us to contribute to the education in and the development of the aquaculture industry” says Dr. Kühlwein. “This MSc programme, backed by the extensive scientific experience of the programme leaders and the research group in the field of functional feed ingredients for aquaculture, offers great opportunities in that direction.”

Dr. Daniel Merrifield, Associate Professor of Fish Health and Nutrition and Programme Lead on the MSc Sustainable Aquaculture course, adds: “one  of the key strengths of our programme is the diversity and depth of industry engagement through the curriculum. Leading figures from across various sectors of the industry contribute to the programme by providing guest lectures, resources, hosting placements, supporting projects and providing scholarships. Over a number of years, our students have benefited from our long standing relationship with Leiber GmbH which provides a fascinating insight into current innovations and industry requirements.”

For Leiber, sustainability is the business model for already more than six decades. By-products from breweries, brewers' yeast and spent grains, are refined into high-quality products for animal nutrition, food industry and biotechnology. Just through its business model alone, Leiber is therefore already making its contribution to sustainability. In addition, economical use of electrical energy and heat energy, for example, form an integral part of the corporate strategy. With its own biogas plant and 2 turbines, Leiber generates around 35% of electricity and around 10% of its thermal energy needs itself.

Leiber GmbH at Fi Europe in Paris Leiber GmbH at Fi Europe in Paris
Leiber GmbH at Fi Europe in Paris The Food Ingredients Europe is the leading event for global innovations of the food and beverage industry. It took place in Paris from December 3rd to 5th, 2019.

Also the Leiber GmbH – as international manufacturer of specialty brewers’ yeast products - had an own booth. This year the team presented the innovative "SoYE concept". Leiber’s SoYE Sauce gives developers the tools to achieve a typical soy sauce taste without using soy. Our SoYE Sauce is available in powder form and solely based on natural yeast extract, without soy or wheat allergens.

Another focus was the presentation of various "vegan applications" based on brewers’ yeast extracts such as Leiber-Cheese Booster Vegan or the Veaty® range for meat replacements. These extracts especially have been created as solution for vegetarian & vegan applications. By offering several tastings, it was possible to get an immediate impression of the sensory effects of Leiber’s yeast extracts.

These comprehensive tastings were well received by the visitors, as they illustrated the various applications of our different taste profiles. Dr. Bernd Weinreich, business unit director Food, stated, "Tasting the ‘desired sensory effect’ is the most convincing argument for a customer to find solutions for a ‘taste issue’. Therefore, tastings are more convincing than just theoretical product explanations."

Leiber GmbH will also be represented at Fi/Hi Europe in Frankfurt end of this year with an own stand. We are already looking forward to welcoming you at our booth 41F50.

Change of managing director with new dual leadership Change of managing director with new dual leadership
On the 31st December 2019, Michael von Laer will, at his own request, cease being the managing director of Leiber GmbH in order to take up a new professional challenge. During the 19 years in which Michael von Laer has been responsible for Leiber GmbH as its director, he has contributed to the successful development of the company, nationally and internationally, and with a great deal of commitment advanced this specialist for brewers’ yeast products and yeast extracts.

Leiber's strong growth over the last few years, the development of business segments, the global representation and investment in its, by now, 250 committed employees were the reason why Leiber GmbH decided to distribute the associated workload and responsibilities across more than one person.

The partner managing director, Mr. Bernd Schmidt-Ankum, and the managing director Mr. Gilbert Klausmeyer will immediately take over the leadership of this brewers’ yeast specialist. This new dual leadership will ensure a smooth transition and the continuity of the Leiber management. Being a partner and having been on the Board of Directors for 16 years, Mr. Bernd Schmidt-Ankum is very familiar with Leiber and has always aimed to significantly shape the technological progress within the industry.

During the last 11 years, Mr. Gilbert Klausmeyer was the business administration manager and authorised officer of the company Schne-frost. Before that, he had been working in a variety of similar positions within the food industry, where, in a number of diverse companies, he was able to collect comprehensive experience in commercial management and controlling. Gilbert Klausmeyer regards the active shaping of this brewers’ yeast specialist's strategic development as his particular challenge as a new managing director of Leiber GmbH.

Leiber GmbH has specialised in the refinement of brewers’ yeast products. The product portfolio offers a number of different product solutions: pure brewers’ yeast, brewers’ yeast bound to carriers with additional effects, specialist products with specific effects and even yeast extracts and autolysates.

Ask a lot of questions and be curious! Ask a lot of questions and be curious!
Ask a lot of questions and be curious! "Ask a lot of questions, dig deep and stay curious", this is what the personnel manager Franz Lobenberg recommends to all of the new apprentices at Leiber. During the two induction days, the "newbies" received a lot of information about the company, its products, its sites and, most of all, about safety and hygiene. But there also were some fun programme items, such as a company quiz, lunch together and activities with the apprentice mentors. Surprise and amusement greeted of the Leiber starters' goodie-bags, which were handed out to each of the apprentices at the start of their training. Filled with all sorts of bits and bobs which should make life easier during training.

Company director Michael von Laer is delighted with this large group of highly motivated young staff. "Despite the lack of trained technicians noticeable everywhere, we received many and very good applications," said von Laer. "In any case, training is a very 'BIG' thing at Leiber."

Leiber is also a partner of the Niedersachsen-Technikum. After they have finished school, qualifying with Abitur, young women with an interest in STEM subjects (professions in science, technology, engineering and mathematics) have the opportunity here, to familiarise themselves with a company for 6 months and, at the same time, to experience studying at the University of Osnabrück once a week.

Going abroad during the apprenticeship - Leiber apprentice visits France Going abroad during the apprenticeship - Leiber apprentice visits France
Going abroad during the apprenticeship - Leiber apprentice visits France Going abroad during the apprenticeship – increasing numbers of young people take advantage of this offer. One of them is Niina Shiiba, currently in the second year of her apprenticeship to become a food technician at Leiber in Bramsche. She received an offer to join a trip to France as part of the Erasmus programme of the EU. The aim of the journey was  to give apprentices from Germany an idea of how work in the French food industry is carried out. After all, France in particular is famous for good cooking and food.

"I did not need to think for long when my trainer told me about the offer", says Niina Shiiba. "We, six students from my technical college, went for a week to Rennes." This week was for the apprentices not just a string of visits in companies and schools. On the outward journey, the group visited the famous island of Mont Saint-Michel. Niina Shiiba was particularly excited by the visit to the school for food in Rennes. There, they have a small production facility and their own laboratory. "During the days of our stay, we had the opportunity to prepare butter, cream cheese and yoghurt.

At the end of the week we had a tasting of the products that we had made ourselves", said the apprentice. In contrast to Germany, in France, there is no dual apprenticeship system. In France, the fees for the training school also have to be paid for by the trainees themselves. Other exciting visits were the one to the French seasoning plant Solina Saveur SA and to the oyster farm in St. Malo and, of course, a long spell on the beach.

"I can really recommend to take part in such an exchange. It expands the horizon and is good fun to gain an insight into how the work is done in other countries", says Niina Shiiba. Franz Lobenberg, the Leiber personnel manager adds: "It is important for us to provide a varied and qualified training for the young people. If somebody is interested, we support them to spend some time abroad as part of the training or to experience a different company. We regularly take apprentices to our plant in Poland."

Leiber employees donate for children and youth funds Leiber employees donate for children and youth funds

The Leiber employees made donations and the management doubled the sum.

On Friday, 29 March 2019, Natalia Gerdes accepted a symbolic cheque for 1200 euros for the Diakonie in Bramsche. Every year, the brewer's yeast manufacturer with plants, in amongst other places, Bramsche and Engter, organises a Christmas party, and every year the employees then do something for people in need of support. The works council chairman Claudia Kruse explained: "Small presents that we receive over the year are collected up and become the wins in a tombola. The takings from the sale of the tickets are collected over two years and then doubled by the company management; the total is then donated to a local charitable project." The works council collects suggestions from the employees, which are then voted on. This year the choice fell on the children and youth fund of the Diakonie, the church's social work organisation.

"You are not often that lucky", said Natalia Gerdes happy about the big cheque. The fund is financed by donations from church congregations, companies, but also individuals and it is used to support families in acute emergency situations. "During our counselling sessions we get to see the problems directly where they are", explained Gerdes. Children grow, they need new shoes or materials for school, which exceed the financial strength of their parents, extra tuition or, in the case of teenagers, the travel costs to the technical college, "All these are things not covered by the educational and participation package", according to the social worker of the churches in the region. By helping the children, the counsellors at the Diaconie hope to form additional contacts to the parents in order to give sustainable help to the families and support them in their role as educators.

Gold medal and innovation prize in Poland

This year's visit to the FERMA trade fair was crowned with shining success for Leiber GmbH and its Polish daughter company - Leiber Sp. z. o.o. based in Krosniewice.

This year, the animal feed department with its brewers' yeast range was, once again, represented at the fair in Lodz. FERMA is regarded as the international trade fair and platform for producers and breeders of livestock, pork and poultry in Poland. A commission consisting of members of the Polish Chamber of Agriculture, scientists and a representative of the fair organisation, awarded medals to two of Leiber brewers' yeast products.

The new product Leiber YeaFi® AB, a mixed product consisting of brewers' yeast compounded with apple pomace and beet pulp, was awarded a prize as an "innovation" on account of its high content of active fibres for the support of the digestion by the animals. During the development of the product, special attention was given by Leiber to the grain-free composition, as the animal feed industry and animal owners have increasingly demanded this in recent years.

The second product that was awarded the "gold medal" was Biolex® MB40, a specialist brewers' yeast product from the Leiber animal feed range. It consists of the cell walls of genuine brewers' yeast (Saccharomyces Cerevisiae), which are obtained during the production of soluble brewers' yeast extracts. Its high levels of beta-glucans and mannan-oligosaccharides, for example, actively support and relieve the immune system, and bind and inactivate pathogens and toxins in the gut.

Both Andrzej Sobieraj on behalf of the Polish subsidiary and the director of the business unit for animal nutrition, Nikolaus Jungbluth are delighted with the awards.

Brewers' Yeast Specialist Leiber wants to expand further Brewers' Yeast Specialist Leiber wants to expand further
Brewers' Yeast Specialist Leiber wants to expand further County commissioner Michael Lübbersmann at Leiber GmbH (2nd from left). Photo & Text: Landkreis Osnabrück

Leiber GmbH wants to expand further

Brewers’ yeast is a valuable raw material: Leiber GmbH in Bramsche refines it for applications in food production, animal feed production, the health sector and the biotechnology sector. County commisioner Michael Lübbersmann and Siegfried Averhage, head of the Business & Economics Department of the district of Osnabrück, were able to get an idea of the production processes of yeast specialty products at the brewer's yeast extraction plant in Bramsche-Engter. Managing Director Michael von Laer and Chairman of the Board of Directors Bernd Schmidt-Ankum made it clear that the family-owned company wanted to continue to expand, but also increasingly saw challenges in terms of skilled worker acquisition.

In Bramsche, Leiber produces at two locations: The main plant on the Mittellandkanal is home to the animal nutrition area, the research and development laboratories and parts of the administration. Yeast extracts were produced, further refined and dried into powders using state-of-the-art technology. Connected to the spray tower is a semi-automatic high-bay warehouse with around 4,000 pallet spaces. Other locations are managed by the family-run company in Poland and Russia. At all four locations a total of about 250 employees are employed, described by von Laer. "As for everyone, it is increasingly difficult for us to recruit skilled workers," says the managing director. "Qualified professional training is a priority at Leiber - it is important to us to offer young people good prospects".

With County commissioner Lübbersmann, the two company executives agreed that the strengthening of the Osnabrück university location sought by the district was a good building block in securing skilled labor: "Attractive university locations draw students to the region and keep them many even after graduation - as the relevant studies show." , so Lübbersmann.
