The new “Colouring”: Leiber-Asada DC, LS The current clean label trend in the food processing industry demands substituting food ingredients with an E-number for natural, E-number-free alternatives. This also affects the application of colourants. The colourant “Caramel” (E 150) is used in numerous food applications to generate a brown colour.

Leiber-Asada DC, LS is especially developed to be used as a “natural replacement” for Caramel colour. Characterized by a very mild, neutral taste and an intense typical brown colour it is the ideal solution to create natural, E-number-free foodstuffs. Leiber GmbH von The Food Ingredients Asia is a three day event being held every two years at International Expo in Jakarta, Indonesia. This event showcases product innovations of any kind of food applications. New business partners can be found and relationships can be established, primarily for the Asia-Pacific region. Producers from the food and beverage, bakery and confectionery industries as well as manufacturers of packaging materials are represented at the fair.

Also the Leiber GmbH – as international manufacturer of specialty brewers’ yeast products – exhibited. The increasing importance of the FiA exhibition in Jakarta is demonstrated in a steady increasing number of exhibitors. Compared to previous FiA shows in Jakarta, this year a lot more visitors from all over South-East Asia as well as the Pacific region visited the event. The chances to create new customer contacts, as well as to promote new product ideas on this event become more and more interesting.

In this context it was particularly pleasing that the FiA organization team awarded the Leiber booth as the “most informative booth”  at FiA 2018. The FiA 2018 Best Booth Awards recognized exhibitors bringing innovation and creativity to the show floor, displaying their ingredients in an engaging format.

“So far, it was our best FiA-show over the last four years. A lot of new customer contacts as well as serious interest among existing customers could be generated, due to the first time presentation of our new, allergen free and halal certified SoYE-extract. This extract offers a typical Soy-taste profile without using soy. It was rated as a very innovative approach. The immune ingredient Yestimun® Beta-Glucan achieved an additional regulatory status with the independent „Generally Recognized As Safe” (GRAS) notice in the US.

Yestimun® Beta-Glucan achieved already Novel Food authorisation in the European Union last year. “Now Yestimun® Beta-Glucan achieved the two most important authorisations for innovative food ingredients worldwide”, reports Eike Hagemann, Business Unit Director Health at Leiber GmbH. “Our international customers need a safe regulatory basis to ensure the marketability of their new product developments.”

Dr. Jan Winters took over the position of the business development manager EMEA since June 2018. In his position he is responsible for the professional customer support in the health department.

“Leiber GmbH as well as Yestimun® Beta-Glucan are well known in the industrial sector” mentioned Dr. Jan Winters. “I’m convinced of the innovations in the field of natural products, as well as the quality demands of Leiber GmbH. I’m looking forward to contribute my expertise in regulatory affairs and to join the new development of health ingredients.”

After studies of nutritional science Dr. Winters was employed as research associate at the Leibniz University in Hanover where he also obtained his doctorate. The main focus of his dissertation was the legal demarcation of food stuffs and medicinal products in a natural scientific context. Afterwards Dr. Winters was consultant for regulatory affairs for several years in the dietary supplement industry and worked in the area of clinical research.

Leiber GmbH continues to upgrade its expertise in the field of product development. Particularly focusing on projects related to the area of strategic product development in the Food business, Mr. Bajo Bajovic, starting at the 01st of June 2018, joined the Leiber team as Strategic Product Developer Food.

In this newly created position, Bajo Bajovic is responsible for the strategic expansion of new application prospects of Leiber’s yeast extracts in the food segment. Mr. Bajovic works closely with the departments Research & Development, Quality Assurance and Production and forms the interface to the Food Sales team. "With Bajo Bajovic, we welcome an experienced, well-versed expert in the area of strategic product development for food applications to our team, who perfectly complies with the requirements to develop new product concepts and optimizing existing ones." After achieving a degree in food technology at University in Stuttgart-Hohenheim (Germany), Bajo Bajovic had the chance to gain comprehensive professional experience in different positions in development and applications for the meat and convenience industry at Chr. Hansen and VAN HEES GmbH, as well as scientist at German Institute of Food Technologies and since 2013 he had been employed as R&D technologist at Frutarom Savoury Solutions GmbH in Holdorf (Germany). In his new position at Leiber GmbH Bajo Bajovic is responsible for the strategic product development.

Leiber GmbH – specialist since 1954 in refining brewers’ yeast, a natural product – offers a wide range of various product solutions for animal nutrition, from pure brewers’ yeast and brewers’ yeast bonded to substrates, up to special brewers’ yeast products and yeast extracts.

In order to constantly improve their consulting and service competence on the important German sales market, Leiber GmbH is further expanding its sales in the area of animal nutrition. On 01/04/2018, Markus Götz took over the management of animal nutrition sales at Leiber GmbH. In this position, he is responsible for taking care of Leiber’s regular customers and for new customer acquisition in southern Germany, starting immediately.

Having already worked as a technical consultant in direct marketing, he is bringing a well-founded store of sales experience and knowledge with him. Thanks to his former work and advanced training, Markus Götz has a comprehensive view of the animal nutrition industry and is especially well-qualified for fulfilling its consulting needs. A graduate in agrarian biology, he completes the German sales stream headed by team leader and key account manager Florian Morhard, and Helene Schulze Zurmussen as competent contact partner for sales in northern Germany.

Furthermore, the brand new Veaty® concept was presented for the first time at FIE. This concept especially has been created as solution for vegetarian & vegan applications like meat analogues, textured vegetable proteins (TVP), spreads, etc. and is based on a “building block system” which consists of the 3 basic functionalities: Off-taste masking - Adding taste profiles - Colouring.

The Veaty® concept enjoyed popularity at the visitors, especially the various "masking extracts" were of interest. Christmas campaign for the needy

Pyjamas, a coffee machine, a Lego excavator, a little radio: these are but a few of the Caritas clients’ wishes which the staff of Leiber GmbH in Bramsche made come true as part of the Christmas campaign. Gabriele Bührs of the Caritas’ General Social Counselling (ASB) for the city and district of Osnabrück accepted colourful packages for 51 persons at Leiber.

Caritas staff had collected the wishes in recent months and forwarded an anonymised list to Leiber. The Bramsche-based company brought the Christmas campaign with Caritas into being for the second time since 2014. Founded in 1954, Leiber GmbH makes animal feed and foodstuffs from brewer’s yeast. Its employees number 180, many of whom took part in the gift campaign.

Originally, the Works Council called the campaign into being at the suggestion of a staff member, and immediately found support from the management headed by Managing Director Michael von Laer. Again this year, top management took part in the campaign. “It is fantastic that staff and management alike support the Christmas campaign,” said Claudia Kruse, the Works Council member who organised the campaign at Leiber GmbH.

Leiber GmbH specialises in refining brewers’ yeast products and offers manufacturers of pet food, compound feed, concentrates and premixes a number of different product solutions: pure brewers’ yeast, brewers’ yeast bonded to substrates with additional effects and capabilities, special products with specific effects, up to functional brewers’ yeast extracts and autolysates.

In order to meet customers’ high demand for qualified consulting and support, Ms. Helene Schulze Zurmussen has been actively assisting the Animal Nutrition business unit since 1 November. Her task in the area of sales is to acquire new business partners and provide support for the existing customer base in North Germany. Having grown up on a farm specialising in keeping and breeding horses, including an integrated riding school, Ms. Schulze Zurmussen has the best qualifications for her work at Leiber, thanks to her close connection to agriculture and animal husbandry.

She received her Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Sciences at Bonn University in 2013. Three years later followed her Master of Science in Animal Husbandry. By taking part in a research project at the Institute of Agricultural Engineering, “Providing Concentrated Feed to Individual Horses Kept in Groups by means of Computer-Controlled Concentrated Feeding Stations” through the University of Bonn, Helene Schulze Zurmussen further expanded her knowledge of feed and is now perfectly equipped to provide consulting for Leiber’s customers. She reports directly to Florian Morhard, head of Leiber’s sales team.

Yestimun® Beta-Glucan now approved as Novel Food Ingredient Yestimun® Beta-Glucan now approved as Novel Food Ingredient
The immune ingredient Yestimun® Beta-Glucan finally achieved a new regulatory status. After being sold for 15 years officially as normal food ingredient, the regulatory status now changed to “Novel Food”.

During the last years some beta-glucans have been sold as normal food while others have been categorized as Novel Food ingredient. This caused lots of regulatory discrepancies and discussions with authorities and customers. To have an equal competition with other Novel Food registered beta-glucans and to make the regulatory aspects easier and better understandable, Leiber GmbH finally decided to make a Novel Food application for Yestimun® as well.

“There have been several reasons for making an own full application and not just a substantial equivalence”, explained Eike Hagemann, Business Unit Director Health at Leiber GmbH. “The most important aspect was to expand the use levels and food categories for Yestimun® in comparison to already authorized yeast beta-glucans.”

The own Novel Food application for Yestimun® includes use levels up to 1500 mg per day in food supplements. These dosages are safe and give more possibilities for different product concepts. “The new Novel Food approval will make regulatory issues easier for our customers, especially in countries, where the authority’s opinion has been a big challenge before”, says Hagemann.

Now the regulatory status is officially confirmed by the European Authorities and should be accepted everywhere (Commission Implementing Decision (EU) 2017/2078). Furthermore the process of Novel Food Authorization also included a complete safety assessment of Yestimun® and confirms the high quality and safety of the ingredient for functional food and supplement applications. In combination with the ongoing interest and trend to immune supporting products we can look forward to new interesting products including the immune ingredient Yestimun® from brewers’ yeast. Leiber GmbH is expanding its Animal Nutrition business unit, focussing on international business. Dr Thomas Bissot has been strengthening the Leiber sales team as Global Key Account Manager for Pet Food since August 2017.

In this newly created position, Dr Thomas Bissot is taking care of the international market leaders and opinion formers in the pet food industry in order to expedite the expansion of Leiber yeast products and extracts in the pet food segment around the world. Dr Bissot is concentrating not only on supporting existing customers, but also on acquiring new business partners by developing customer-specific sales and marketing campaign solutions. He reports directly to Business Unit Director Nikolaus Jungbluth. “In Dr Thomas Bissot we can welcome to our team an experienced, well-versed expert in the area of pet food whose skill profile is ideal for taking competent care of our customers and for markedly strengthening Leiber’s presence in the pet food segment,” Nikolaus Jungbluth emphasises.

Following a degree in veterinary medicine at the University of Liège in Belgium, Dr Thomas Bissot first gained practical experience in a small-animal clinic and at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Ghent. In 2005 he joined the Royal Canin Research and Development Centre as project manager. His projects here focussed on small animal gastroenterology and obesity biology, as well as the nutrition and behaviour of small animals in intensive-care medicine. From 2008 to 2015 Dr Thomas Bissot was responsible for scientific communication and coordination between sixty countries in the eastern and southern region. From 2016 to 2017, Thomas Bissot also achieved an executive MBA at Montpellier Business School.

Since March 2016, Marie-Christin Reismann has been strengthening Leiber GmbH as Distribution Assistant in the Business Unit Animal Nutrition and has been responsible not only for assisting the division management, as well as distribution and marketing activities, but also for organising and handling all customer orders and service enquiries of the worldwide export business of Leiber GmbH.

Starting immediately, Reismann will be devoting herself to Product Management Monogastrics at Leiber. This includes expanding and promoting the use of feed from brewers’ yeast products in the area of pigs and poultry at the international level. With her bachelor’s and master’s degree in the field of agribusiness, she has acquired a wide range of economic knowledge of agricultural, animal, environmental and consumer issues, which covers all aspects of agriculture as well as sections of the value added chain.

“Thanks to her career as agronomist, as well as her technical knowledge in the area of agribusiness, Ms. Reismann with her experience fits very well into our product management team,” says Division Manager Nikolaus Jungbluth, delighted at the successful change.

In July 2017 Leiber finalized its Veaty® concept and officially presented it at the IFT in Las Vegas. This concept especially has been created as solution for vegetarian & vegan applications, like: meat analogues, textured vegetable proteins (TVP), spreads, high protein applications, etc. and is based on a “building block system” which consists of the 3 basic functionalities:
Off-taste masking - Adding taste profiles - Colouring 
  • Extracts for Masking:
    To neutralize the genuine, unpleasant off-taste of the raw materials used for vegetarian & vegan applications, especially vegetable proteins like: soya, pea, lupine and chickpea 
  • Extracts for Taste (BN = Body Notes, TN = Top Notes):
    The body notes impart “basic tastes” with profiles like beef, chicken, lamb or pork The top notes (TN) can be applied as key flavour components to individualise and strengthen product taste profiles like: roasted-smoky, barbecued, roasted-beef 
  • Extracts for Colouring:
    Neutral in taste and giving an intense brown colour to achieve a “meaty-like” look.

 

Veaty® - The solution for vegetarian & vegan applications
The Veaty® range is a tailor-made and improved development for vegetarian & vegan food applications based on our standard Leiber extracts. Due to the fact that our yeast extracts do have a natural protein content of approx. 70% the biggest advantage we can offer is that we are solely using “protein-mixes” (yeast extracts), to achieve the mentioned functionalities. This means no “non-protein” ingredients are added to the final product. Next to this our Veaty® products are of course clean label, from a natural source, GMO-free (VLOG certified), kosher, halal and gluten free according to EU legislation 828/2014.

A group of herd managers from Chinese dairy operations made a visit to Leiber’s Bramsche headquarter in April. The delegation was received by Leiber’s Product Manager for Livestock, Christoph Schröder, who attended to all the needs of the delegation during their stay and was available to answer any and all questions.

The group of Chinese visitors got a good idea of Leiber’s production facilities and the high quality requirements, as reflected in the various standards expected from the entire company.

Top priority was given to enabling German and Chinese herd managers to share their experiences. In this connection, the group visited three specialised dairy farming operations in the Osnabrück and Emsland region. Practical questions concerning silage and calf rearing met with great interest. The different ways to make use of Leiber® BT brewers’ yeast with ruminants were gone into at length.
