Leiber GmbH is strengthening its partners through collaboration with Agrando Leiber GmbH has started a new collaboration with the trading platform Agrando. Brewer's yeast products have long been used by animal owners and the mixed feed industry as natural feeds. Thanks to the listing of Leiber's product pellet of brewers' yeast and brewers' grain product range on Agrando.de, Leiber is giving its animal feed customers a yet more direct contact to their end customers.

Agrando acts as an interface to support the digital agricultural trade and brings all the involved parties - manufacturers, farmers and agricultural traders - onto a single internet platform together. If the keywords "brewers' yeast" or "brewers' grains" are entered, anybody interested will find in the online catalogue all of the Leiber products listed, and they can purchase them directly from the trader. Even faster is the search term "Leiber".

The Health Department is glad to welcome back Karolin Kreutzer as Global Business Development Manager Health since 15th September 2020. Together with Mr. Dr. Jan Winters, who is responsible for business development in EMEA, they will focus on the further expansion of the Health division.

The previous, long-standing business unit director, Mr. Eike Hagemann, left the company at the end of August in order to address himself to a new professional challenge. Mr. Hagemann led with great commitment the division and achieved various success-stories.

Ms. Kreutzer, who already worked for Leiber GmbH as Key Account Manager EMEA Food for many years, is delighted about her return to Leiber and the new challenge: "I am looking forward to the task of positioning our Yestimun® on the global market. We will strategically realign with established and new business partners and focus on the further development of our portfolio."

Personnel changes within the Leiber Business Unit Animal Nutrition became effective on 1 September 2020. The previous head of business unit, Nikolaus Jungbluth, has decided after 11 years to leave the company on 31 October 2020 in order to tackle a new professional challenge. He has passed the management baton to Helge Jakubowski who had been working in the company since 1 November 2018 as Key Account Manager & Team Leader Sales Germany.

"In the name of the shareholders and the entire Leiber Team, I thank Mr.  Jungbluth for the successful development of the Business Unit Animal Nutrition within Leiber“, said CEO Bernd Schmidt-Ankum. “We wish him all the best and hope he has success both professionally and personally. Leiber GmbH presented at GDL symposium The German Association of Food Technologists (GDL e.V.) organized a symposium about "Vegetarian and vegan food - a technological challenge?!" in Bremerhaven, Germany from 02 – 03 September 2020.
 
Leiber GmbH was represented with a technical lecture about “Yeast extract – more than just umami in vegetarian and vegan food.” The objective was to give an impression about the functionalities and variety of applications of our yeast extracts to the more than 100 participants.
 
“In the strong growing market for plant-based meat and dairy products, customers are increasing their expectations to the products in terms of taste, texture and variety of products. Fulfilling these customer demands represents a major challenge to product developments. Leiber GmbH’s Food business unit strengthens its international sales activities with a range of new cooperation partners and continues its expansion course. We highly appreciate to announce three new partnerships from beginning of 01 August 2020.

Foodguys will be responsible for the distribution of yeast extracts in the United States of America and replaces our long-term partner Pacific Coast. Chris Long will remain the contact person, as he also switches to Foodguys.

With British Canadian Importers Ltd. (BCI), another strategic partnership has been built up to place our product range in the Canadian market. BCI shows over 80 years of experience in importing and distributing food ingredients in Canada. Study on the prebiotic effect of yeast cell walls published in Journal of Animal Science (JAS) Study on the prebiotic effect of yeast cell walls published in Journal of Animal Science (JAS)
In collaboration with Ghent University, Leiber GmbH carried out a study with the aim of assessing the potential of the prebiotic activity of Biolex® MB40 within the canine gastrointestinal tract. Biolex® MB40 consists of cell walls of genuine brewer's yeast (100 % Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and is distinguished among other factors by its high natural content of β-glucan and Mannan oligosaccharides (MOS).

For the study, an in-vitro system (SCIME™ Simulator of the Canine Intestinal Microbial Ecosystem) was deployed, which can retrace the entire canine digestive tract with all its microbiological processes under controlled conditions without working directly with an animal. The SCIME™ delivered not only detailed information about the prebiotic activity of Biolex® MB40 by measuring various biomarkers, but also the precise location of the area where it is active.

In the study that has now been published, a prebiotic effect of Biolex® MB40 on the canine gastrointestinal tract could be demonstrated. Biolex® MB40 is digested moderately and selectively, in particular by the canine microflora in the distal colon. Changes in the metabolic activity were able to be directly associated with specific changes to the microbiota, e.g. the stimulation of propionate–producing families, such as Porphyromonadaceae and Prevotellaceae. At the same time, potential pathogens, such as Enterobacteriaceae and Fusobacteriaceae were able to be decreased. Biolex® MB40 therefore has a positive influence on the composition and activity of the microorganisms and is a promising natural source for the improvement and protection of intestinal health.

Guest lecture at University of Plymouth: Sustainable aquaculture and functional brewer’s yeast products Sustainable aquaculture and functional brewer’s yeast products – industry guest lecture at University of Plymouth and scholarship

Aquaculture significantly contributes to food and protein supplies around the globe. Aquaculture production now exceeds capture fisheries landings as a source of food for human consumption, accounting for 53 % of total global fish production (FAO, 2018). Aquaculture is often already a sustainable production system but more can be done to help underpin the Sustainable Development Goals adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015.

At the University of Plymouth, students on the MSc Sustainable Aquaculture course are offered an excellent training programme on the sustainable use of resources for aquaculture production, aquatic animal health, reduction of environmental impacts and addressing socio-economic factors. As part of the programme a series of industry guest lectures is delivered by representatives from leading companies and organisations along the value chain in order to give students first-hand insights from a commercial perspective.
 
This year’s initial lecture of 25th February was given by Dr. Holger Kühlwein, Global Key Account Manager Aquaculture at Leiber GmbH. He presented an overview of the wide brewer’s yeast product range using different fractions of the yeast cell, their quality aspects and applications in aquafeeds and aquatic animal health, and how these products can contribute to overall sustainable aquaculture. The focus however was on highly-purified ß-glucans extracted from the yeast cell wall. These are fed prophylactically via functional feeds, and they are capable of increasing immune competence of animals leading to higher stress and disease resistance. Core markets for these purified ß-glucans are salmon and rainbow trout, sea bass and sea bream as well as the shrimp production.

Industry Scholarship Programme
As part of the extended collaboration and commitment to sustainable aquaculture Leiber GmbH is also investing in the Aquaculture Sustainability Industry Scholarship Programme by providing funding for two of the students. Each of them will be able to apply and further develop acquired knowledge and lab skills by being part of the testing of two selected brewer’s yeast products. Their specific functionalities require scientific evaluation across various species and their life stages, as well as a constant (re)adjustment according to scientific developments and changing requirements in the aquafeed industry as a whole. “This, in combination with the predicted high annual growth rates of the aquaculture industry and the consequential increasing need for a highly-skilled workforce, is the incentive for us to contribute to the education in and the development of the aquaculture industry” says Dr. Kühlwein. “This MSc programme, backed by the extensive scientific experience of the programme leaders and the research group in the field of functional feed ingredients for aquaculture, offers great opportunities in that direction.”

Dr. Daniel Merrifield, Associate Professor of Fish Health and Nutrition and Programme Lead on the MSc Sustainable Aquaculture course, adds: “one  of the key strengths of our programme is the diversity and depth of industry engagement through the curriculum. Leading figures from across various sectors of the industry contribute to the programme by providing guest lectures, resources, hosting placements, supporting projects and providing scholarships. Over a number of years, our students have benefited from our long standing relationship with Leiber GmbH which provides a fascinating insight into current innovations and industry requirements.”

Leiber GmbH at Fi Europe in Paris The Food Ingredients Europe is the leading event for global innovations of the food and beverage industry. It took place in Paris from December 3rd to 5th, 2019.

Also the Leiber GmbH – as international manufacturer of specialty brewers’ yeast products - had an own booth. This year the team presented the innovative "SoYE concept". Leiber’s SoYE Sauce gives developers the tools to achieve a typical soy sauce taste without using soy. Our SoYE Sauce is available in powder form and solely based on natural yeast extract, without soy or wheat allergens.

Another focus was the presentation of various "vegan applications" based on brewers’ yeast extracts such as Leiber-Cheese Booster Vegan or the Veaty® range for meat replacements. These extracts especially have been created as solution for vegetarian & vegan applications. By offering several tastings, it was possible to get an immediate impression of the sensory effects of Leiber’s yeast extracts.
 
These comprehensive tastings were well received by the visitors, as they illustrated the various applications of our different taste profiles. Dr. Bernd Weinreich, business unit director Food, stated, "Tasting the ‘desired sensory effect’ is the most convincing argument for a customer to find solutions for a ‘taste issue’. Therefore, tastings are more convincing than just theoretical product explanations."

Change of managing director with new dual leadership Change of managing director with new dual leadership
On the 31st December 2019, Michael von Laer will, at his own request, cease being the managing director of Leiber GmbH in order to take up a new professional challenge. During the 19 years in which Michael von Laer has been responsible for Leiber GmbH as its director, he has contributed to the successful development of the company, nationally and internationally, and with a great deal of commitment advanced this specialist for brewers’ yeast products and yeast extracts.
 
Leiber's strong growth over the last few years, the development of business segments, the global representation and investment in its, by now, 250 committed employees were the reason why Leiber GmbH decided to distribute the associated workload and responsibilities across more than one person.
 
The partner managing director, Mr. Bernd Schmidt-Ankum, and the managing director Mr. Gilbert Klausmeyer will immediately take over the leadership of this brewers’ yeast specialist. This new dual leadership will ensure a smooth transition and the continuity of the Leiber management. Being a partner and having been on the Board of Directors for 16 years, Mr. Bernd Schmidt-Ankum is very familiar with Leiber and has always aimed to significantly shape the technological progress within the industry.
 
During the last 11 years, Mr. Gilbert Klausmeyer was the business administration manager and authorised officer of the company Schne-frost. Before that, he had been working in a variety of similar positions within the food industry, where, in a number of diverse companies, he was able to collect comprehensive experience in commercial management and controlling. Gilbert Klausmeyer regards the active shaping of this brewers’ yeast specialist's strategic development as his particular challenge as a new managing director of Leiber GmbH.

Since the 20th of November 2019 Mrs. Simone Erb strengthens the Leiber food team. She joined as Key Account Manager and will be responsible for the further expansion of distributing Leiber’s yeast extracts in the EMEA market.

After achieving a degree in Food Technology at the University of Applied Sciences in Fulda (Germany), she completed a postgraduate study in Industrial Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein in Mönchengladbach (Germany).

Afterwards, Simone Erb had the chance to gain comprehensive professional experiences in the food sector. She worked in the fields of Product Development, Application Management and Product Management for Tchibo, NZMP Germany GmbH (Fonterra) and Molda AG.

Since 2010, she was employed at Chemische Fabrik Budenheim KG, which belongs to the Oetker Group. For 8 years she was responsible as Global Business Development Manager for the divisions Dairy and Cheese and most recently as Technical Sales Manager for EMEA.

Dr. Bernd Weinreich, Business Unit Director Food, emphasizes: "Based on the comprehensive expertise of Mrs. Erb, as well as her experiences in international business development, we see great opportunities for our innovative Leiber’s yeast extracts to find new applications and markets. Ask a lot of questions and be curious! "Ask a lot of questions, dig deep and stay curious", this is what the personnel manager Franz Lobenberg recommends to all of the new apprentices at Leiber. During the two induction days, the "newbies" received a lot of information about the company, its products, its sites and, most of all, about safety and hygiene. But there also were some fun programme items, such as a company quiz, lunch together and activities with the apprentice mentors. Surprise and amusement greeted of the Leiber starters' goodie-bags, which were handed out to each of the apprentices at the start of their training. Filled with all sorts of bits and bobs which should make life easier during training.

Company director Michael von Laer is delighted with this large group of highly motivated young staff. "Despite the lack of trained technicians noticeable everywhere, we received many and very good applications," said von Laer. "In any case, training is a very 'BIG' thing at Leiber."

Leiber is also a partner of the Niedersachsen-Technikum. After they have finished school, qualifying with Abitur, young women with an interest in STEM subjects (professions in science, technology, engineering and mathematics) have the opportunity here, to familiarise themselves with a company for 6 months and, at the same time, to experience studying at the University of Osnabrück once a week.

Leiber GmbH’s Food business unit strengthens its international sales activities with a range of new cooperation partners and continues its expansion course. Four new distributors have been acquired to increase the sales network.

Medist FZE, based in Dubai, will be responsible for the distribution of yeast extracts in the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

After Azelis Denmark took over the responsibilities for Scandinavia and the Baltic States last year, we are pleased to inform that we won Azelis Spain as additional partner and part of the Azelis Group. The team managed by Alessandro Monda will expand the distribution of our products in Spain and Portugal.
 
With Barentz South Africa, another strategic partnership has been built to position our product range in the South African market.

Since June 2019, we also welcome Maeho Trading, who takes over the expansion of sales activities for the Food Business Unit in South Korea. Fermentation products continue to be served by Bision Corporation.

By taking this step, Leiber is optimizing its international sales and service processes of the Food Business Unit. Dr. Bernd Weinreich, Business Unit Director of Food, commented: "To expand the distribution of our innovative brewers’ yeast extract products, it is very important for Leiber to enter strategic partnerships with companies in the ingredient sector, whose expertise and sales strategy is based on providing application-based solutions. We see the best opportunities to successfully implement this strategy in the respective countries by collaborating with our four new business partners."
